USFJ STATEMENT ON FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF GREAT EAST JAPAN EARTHQUAKE
YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan - U.S. Forces, Japan and 5th Air Force Commander Lt. Gen. John Dolan released the following statement today to mark the fifth anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake:
“It has been five years since the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred on March 11, 2011, and the world will long remember the courage, strength, and perseverance of the Japanese people that followed.
U.S. Forces were proud to stand by the heroic efforts of the Japanese civil authorities, the Jietai, and ordinary citizens who rushed to provide aid and assistance to those in need. The unprecedented U.S. and Japanese recovery operation that followed was carried out in the spirit of friendship that animates our alliance.
Today, the Japan-U.S. alliance is a beacon of democracy in the Asia-Pacific region. For over seventy years the U.S. and Japan have stood side by side as a symbol of peace, stability, and prosperity.
March 11th is a day of remembrance for the victims, their friends and families, and everyone who continues to help rebuild the devastated areas. Today, we share this solemn obligation and will keep them in our thoughts and prayers.”
